The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum — Heinrich Boll

blum I initially wanted to read this book in college after I took a German Literature class.  My professor gave us a list of books by German authors which he recommended.  Now, almost 5 years later, I have finally read it.

The book begins at the end where we find out Katharina killed a man in her apartment.  In fact, she goes to the police and reports the crime herself.  The book is about the journey it took for her to go from a hard-working, respected young woman to a murderer all in less than a week.

She was brought in to the police station for questioning regarding her involvement with a man who is suspected of being an army deserter and a thief.  Katharina, of course, does not know he is either of these things.  During the course of the questioning, the News (local news magazine) publishes various reports about Katharina.  Most of which is a twisted version of the truth.  Causing her to lose respect from many people she was associated with.

This book is an amazing study of how what is reported in the news shapes who we are and how we see the world.  Also, how it can make or break someone.  I highly recommend this book to everyone.
